Well, this week was a bit of vacation for me, so I had fun with the LTS Lucid release on my new machine. After customizing the desktop, I came up with a gnome + copiz + emerald theme that certainly runs circles around the win 7 desktop that came preinstalled.*



One thing I'd like to point out is that with full compiz desktop magic working + chrome running, the ram meter in the upper right hand corner is reading 20%. What's amazing to me about this is that this machine has only 2 GB of ram -- pretty low spec by current standards. On win 7, on a simple desktop with no apps running ( except, of course, anti-virus ) the ram usage is ~50%. I can hardly figure out how linux can run so much lighter while still doing so much ( more )! Pretty awesome.

I've also finally got linux working again on my old Toshiba P4000, Xubuntu 10.04. There was a problem for a few kernels that made the fan not spin up enough and the machine would overheat and freeze (oops). After lots of frustration, I gave up trying to get linux on there for a while. The latest kernel seems to have sorted this out, and that old machine has been given a new lease on life.

*I actually really like Windows 7, by the way.

Getting Homebrew Set Up For Non-Admin Account on Your Mac OSX 10.8

One of the things that I absolutely love about Linux is the package manager. It was the thing that took the most getting used to when I switched from Windows, but now that I'm in the habit of apt-getting almost everything I need (especially as a developer) it's hard not to have it on other platforms. This year, I switched my life to Mac and am loving it, but I still miss my package manager. Enter homebrew , a package management system for Mac. I was suspicious for a while about this solution, since I'm not really comfortable with installing packages that aren't part of a trusted repository.  My friend David convinced me to give it a try and I think the transparency of the system and the degree to which it keeps things nicely isolated soothes most of my concerns. Mono Versions in Unity 3.5.7 and 4.3.4

Recently, I needed to figure out which versions of Mono Unity is currently supporting. I had to do a little digging to find out, so I thought I’d post the information here to help others who might need the information. One note: Mono versions don’t correspond to C# / .NET versions at all, and .NET feature support varies so a direct mapping of Mono version to .NET version is problematic. That being said, here is a rough mapping of versions: Mono Version .NET Version 2.0 API roughly equivalent to .NET 2.0 C# 2.0 2.6 LINQ to SQL, Partial WCF 2.8 Roughly .NET 4.0, C# 4.0 2.10 C# 5.0 See the Mono Compatibility Page for more information.
